The Global Health Education Initiative: the Dalla Lana School of Public Health

Post11_ghd

I am currently a PGY3 in Radiation Oncology at Western University, London Ontario and am pursuing a 2-year (non-credit) public health program, the Global Health Education Initiative led by the Global Health Division at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health with support from the Office of Postgraduate Medical Education at the University of Toronto.

The Global Health Education Initiative (GHEI) fills a long-recognized gap in the training of health professionals who are interested in making an impact in the global health scene. It adds to informal mentoring by providing a structured, evidence-based, and carefully designed curriculum in a small group format - an approach to global health education unique to this program and to the University of Toronto.

The program objectives are aligned with CANMEDS objectives, emphasizing an understanding of global determinants of health, technical skills, advocacy, management and leadership, interdisciplinary collaboration and public health medical expertise.

The GHEI program provides the knowledge and skills to become more involved within our respective specialty on a global health level in the future.

Road To Care

Post10_road-to-care

Road to Care is a registered Canadian charity that provides women diagnosed with cervical cancer the financial means to access curative treatment. Currently, the Road to Care program is active in Uganda, and is accessed through Hospice Africa Uganda.

Radiotherapy services in Uganda are centralized at Mulago Hospital, Kampala. The vast majority of women who live outside of this capital city are unable to afford the costs associated with seeking treatment. Funds raised by Road to Care are utilized to cover the cost of treatment, investigations, transportation, accommodations and meals for women with curable cervical cancer who would otherwise be unable to access treatment.

UN Political Declaration on Non-communicable Disease

Post_8_sutro_sky2
This historic political declaration comes out of only the second United Nations high-level meeting on a specific health issue (September 19-20, 2011). The first was on HIV/AIDS.  This declaration represents an important step towards specific and concerted global action on cancer and other non-communicable diseases.

The declaration can be accessed at: http://www.un.org/ga/search/view_doc.asp?symbol=A%2F66%2FL.1&Lang=E

Though specific targets and timelines for meeting them were not specified in in the political declaration, specific commitments were made in the declaration that should lead toward this point over the next two years.  Commitments and statements made by specific countries at the high-level meeting are summarized at: http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs//2011/ga11138.doc.htm

CURRENT ONCOLOGY and the CANCER KNOWLEDGE NETWORK

Post_7_current_oncology_post
Current Oncology (CO) is a Canadian open-access journal that has been publishing, online and in print, research papers on cutting-edge topics related to cancer and cancer treatment for over 15 years. To expand its content and increase the readers’ ability to interact with it, CO has created the Cancer Knowledge Network (CKN). A special focus of this new online presence is to work directly with trainees – particularly residents in oncology programs and medical students interested in pursuing a career in oncology.

To meet this goal, Resident Rotation http://multimed.current-oncology.com/residents is a dedicated website with articles published by trainees and for trainees with interactive forums to meet online and discuss articles, interesting cases, questions about material encountered in class or on the wards, and to seek information about Canadian oncology residency and fellowship training programs.

THIS initiative is the first of its kind, but the Cancer Knowldge Network needs your help!!

The CKN is looking for new readers to join discussions and new contributors to help learn and explore oncology.  If you would personally like to contribute an article: please contact public_relations@multimed.com

The CKN has invited the CIC workgroup to contribute articles, research articles, commentaries and build the GLOBAL ONCOLOGY network. If you would like to submit articles in this area- please first contact the CIC workgroup and we will be happy to facilitate this exchange.
